Hartland Quay

The geology of the land is so visible at Hartland Quay – it’s quite amazing! It’s quite hard to know where to start to draw as there is so much to see and the structures and patterns are so unfamiliar. The weather was perfect – despite a poor outlook in the morning by the afternoon it was bright blue and sunny and a very clear view.

from Instow beach and from Westward Ho! Beach

Today we walked from Fremington to Instow on the Tarka Trail. The first drawing is looking from Instow beach across to the next headland. The next one was later, in Westward Ho!, looking a a pile of rocks with the land in the distance behind. I’ve exaggerated the colours of the rocks somewhat!

Putsborough towards Lundy, Mort Point from Wollacombe

Today we walked from Woollacombe to Putsborough. As we walked towards Putsborough it became cloudier and we sheltered in the cafe where I made the first drawing. After the rain we walked back to Woollacombe following the cloud as it went before us. I made the second drawing looking towards Mort Point from Woollacombe – the rocks were amazing, almost like another planet.

It was quite drizzly and muggy but we settled under the trees and managed to do some drawing. I wanted to draw these trees because there a strip of green grass lit quite brightly running through the background. I’m not sure I’ve managed to convey that in this drawing.

In Oxford with the London UrbanSketchers

Today I went to Oxford to draw with the London UrbanSketchers. The day was also joined to the three day ‘Pushing your sketching boundaries’ course – which I would love to do one day. It was great to see old friends from previous days of drawing and also meet some people I have so far only known through the virtual world of Twitter. There’s lots of interest to draw in Oxford, although it’s so very busy there that it’s sometimes hard to find a spot to settle in, without being in the way. It’s always so great to see the work of the other artists and talk to them about how they went about it. There are groups of urban sketchers popping up everywhere now!
