White daisies

I’m determined to really explore my crop of white daisies – they are so tall and strong this year. I’d like to do some collagraph prints maybe a tall one and a long letterbox type one. So lots of drawing of daisies whilst they still in flower in order to have some images to plan prints from.

White daisies in my garden

Carbon pencil

The white daisies have just opened in my garden. I want to capture the whiteness, the lines of the stems and diagonals of the leaves – I’ll have to keep trying. This was drawn using a carbon pencil – something I’ve not used before.

A memory from yesterday.

Brushes Redux app

Yesterday I went to the park and on the way out I glanced over to the left. My eye was caught by a vibrantly bright green bush and light tree trunk with a striking shadow both set against a very dark background of foliage. I could stop to draw and I didn’t have my phone to take a photo. I tried to hold the me memory in my mind until I could get it onto paper – or screen, as it turns out!

Life drawing at Northampton Museum and Gallery

I haven’t done any life drawing for a while so it was good to get the chance to go a class taught by Chris Fiddes this evening. He’s a local artist who has been drawing and life drawing for many years – one of the highlights was being able to browse through his sketchbooks in the break. His commitment to drawing and in particular life drawing was apparent throughout. We firstly had to work with line to refine an outline and check using a grid to try to identify relationships horizontally and vertically. Later we focused on tone when the model was dramatically lit. This experience reminded me that although I rarely use the figure in my printmaking regular life drawing underpins my drawing of everything.
